Hasui Kawase's Onuma Park in Hokkaido captures the northern island's distinctive stillness — an open lake surface, wooded islands in the middle distance, and a sky that seems to hold its breath. The colour palette is cool and restrained: greens bleached by soft northern light, blues that shift between water and sky without abrupt transition. There is a quality of suspension here, the landscape paused between seasons, that Hasui achieves through composition as much as colour.
